Before Cataract Surgery

Your surgeon will conduct a thorough eye exam to assess your eye health and measure your eye for the new lens. You’ll discuss your medical history, current medications, and any allergies. Your doctor may ask you to stop taking certain medications temporarily.

A few days before surgery, you might need to start using antibiotic eye drops to prevent infection. Arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure, as you won’t be able to drive immediately.

During Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is a quick and painless procedure, usually taking 15 to 30 minutes. Your surgeon will numb your eye with drops or a local anesthetic, so you won’t feel pain. You’ll stay awake but may receive a sedative to help you relax.

The surgeon makes a tiny incision in your eye and uses ultrasound or laser technology to break up the cloudy lens. They then remove the pieces and insert the new artificial lens. You won’t see the surgery happening, and the incision typically doesn’t require stitches.

After Cataract Surgery

After surgery, you’ll rest in a recovery area for a short time. Your eye may feel itchy or slightly sore, but avoid rubbing it. You’ll receive instructions on using eye drops to prevent infection and reduce inflammation.

Most people notice improved vision within a few days, though complete healing may take a few weeks. You’ll need to avoid strenuous activities, swimming, and heavy lifting for a while. Attend all follow-up appointments so your doctor can monitor your healing.
