How to Apply Eye Drops

Eye drops are commonly prescribed for conditions like dry eyes, glaucoma, infections, or post-surgery healing. Using them correctly is essential to ensure the medication works effectively and to avoid contamination or wasted drops.

Here is a step-by-step guide to applying eye drops safely.

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly
Always start with clean hands to prevent introducing bacteria into your eye.
  2. Shake the bottle if instructed
Some medications require shaking before use. Check the label or ask your doctor.
  3. Tilt your head back and look up
Sitting or lying down can make the process easier and steadier.
  4. Gently pull down your lower eyelid
This creates a small pocket between your eye and eyelid where the drop will sit.
  5. Hold the dropper above your eye
Keep it close but do not touch your eye, eyelashes, or skin to avoid contamination.
  6. Squeeze one drop into the pocket
Most medications are effective with just one drop. Using more does not increase benefit.
  7. Close your eye gently
Do not squeeze shut; instead, close your eyelid and look down for 1–2 minutes.
  8. Press lightly on the inner corner
Place a finger near the nose at the tear duct to prevent the drop from draining away, increasing absorption and reducing side effects.
  9. Wipe away excess
Use a clean tissue to gently dab any extra liquid from around the eye.
  10. Wait before applying another medication
If you use multiple eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between different medications.

Extra Tips

  • Always follow your doctor’s instructions for dosage and frequency.
  • Store eye drops as directed (some may need refrigeration).
  • Do not share your eye drops with others.
  • Replace bottles before their expiration date.
